THE HAIL MARY OF JOB SEARCHES

I’ve got a really unique strategy to share with you today. I call it the Hail Mary of job searches.

This is such a unique strategy that only a few brave souls try it, but really it’s super easy to implement regardless of where you are in your job search.

Let’s jump right in.

This is the story of David, a client of mine who made several career and position changes, which ultimately led to an increase of 20 percent in his salary.

I met David when he was an IT analyst in a large organization for nearly three years. David was stuck and desperately in need of a raise and a promotion.

He was doing really well at his current job, but because there was no need for a senior position and they could not afford pay more, David’s situation remained the same.

After a year of trying to get promoted within the company David saw that nothing could be done and decided to start his job search.

This is when we met. I coached David and after two months he was able to find a new position as an IT systems manager in a medium organization. The job paid 10% more and was a growth opportunity, so it was everything that David was looking for.

The previous organization, where David worked, realized that David was leaving, but there was nothing they could do about it. As part of my advice to maintain good relationships with previous employers, David left his position in a positive way, trained the person that was replacing him and kept a positive relationship with his old employer after he started his new job.

After two years in his new role, David decided that he was ready for another promotion, and that it was time to go back to working in a large organization again.

Here’s the catch. David did something that only a few do.

David picked up the phone and called his former manager from that first large organization he used to work for. Turns out that that specific organization went through changes and transformations. They started getting into to the field of cloud computing and they needed to hire a new manager for the department. They didn’t even start looking for candidates when David called. David was trying to get back to working in a large organization and here was his chance.

You can probably guess that David became the perfect person for this position, with both his experience of having worked there and the trust and rapport that he already built with his previous manager.

Very few people make phone calls and talk to people from the previous jobs that they’ve had. I guess people are afraid that it could be an awkward and unpleasant conversation.

People are missing out on the potential of a better position in their old company. If you’ve had a positive experience and the company is hiring again you might get an even better position with more pay there.

And that’s exactly what happened for David.

He came back to his old company, received a promotion and an additional 10% raise.

So David now had a 20% salary increase and two promotions.

If there’s a will there’s a way.

This is definitely a more creative way of moving up in your industry and getting your next career advancement, and it works wonders!
